Try On Your New Home Before Buying

Try On Your New Home Before Buying - Usually you should try on suits, skirts, pants or shoes before you buy. People instinctively know to try on clothes to make sure they fit, are comfortable, and look attractive. What about a house? It's probably the most expensive purchase you'll ever make. Isn't it even more important to "try out" a house before buying?

What do I mean? Well, it's normal to find homes in places that are convenient for commuting to work and school. Most people consider commuting when buying a home.

Why not consciously take into account the daily, weekly, or even monthly activities of family members?

 Case Study

I once helped a young, single woman named Wendy find and buy her first home.

She worked for Geico, was doing great in the company, and wanted a home of her own and the tax advantages that ownership brings. She asked for my opinion on the choice and we had a conversation in which I mentioned many of the things that I have said here.

We've made a list of what's important to her. Then we went shopping. We visited many houses. After we broke off each one, we discussed how it compares to Wendy's list.

One of the houses we visited belonged to a young woman who would later become my daughter-in-law. It's brick, all on one floor, has a fireplace in the living room and has patio doors from the master bedroom and dining areas to a large deck with a hot tub.

It is nicely decorated in a "clean Victorian" style. There's a brass bed, some wicker plants, plenty of healthy houseplants, and some Victorian furniture that's actually old heirloom furniture.

Silver framed family photos clustered on the piano.

After we got out of the house, Wendy started to get off the bus two steps, then stood frozen in place. She has the weirdest expression on her face.

I asked her what was wrong, and she began to look embarrassed and confessed: “This house is beautiful and beautifully decorated, I liked it just looking at it and didn't think I would live there. I just want it.

We go back inside. Wendy still admires what she's done with the house, but decides it's not good for her.

Knowing what is important to you can help you avoid costly mistakes. The process of “trying on” a home helps you gauge what is important. I think you'll find it worth it.
